An English Country Garden Collaboration at Cake International

Updated: Jan 24, 2019

I have been working hard on a very exciting collaboration with 21 other cake makers from around the UK to create a beautiful English Country Garden for Cake International which was at Birmingham NEC between 3rd and 5th November. As a cake maker, working alone is possibly the most negative part of my job as it can be very lonely. This collaboration we named 'The Lustre Dusters' was formed by lots of friendly cake makers from across the UK communicating online via a cake Facebook group. Our friendships blossomed and encouraged one another whilst working and it was really lovely to finally meet everyone when putting our work made together and then becoming one fantastic team. Its been an amazing experience with a huge range of skills, experience and strengths coming together to make something really special. Even some of the talented cake makers children have contributed too with creepy crawlies and garden visitors so it had a real family feel. Can you spot them? My strawberry plant got a few naughty visitors! My allocated pieces I created were the strawberry plant pot cake, part of the pretty flower bed including the foxglove, roses and primroses and part of the grass and pebble path. The collaboration has given me so much confidence and encouragement to learn new skills. I had never made a fox glove or primrose sugar flowers before so was quite a challenge. I also had never entered Cake International so this was a exciting but nerve wrecking experience too. We had some fantastic sponsors who kindly gave us some free products to use including sugar paste, cake dummies, flower paste, cake boards, modelling paste and drums these were Squires Kitchen, Dummies Direct and Surbiton Art

To top the experience off we were also featured in Januarys issue of Cake Masters which was so exciting to find when looking at the magazines on my weekly shop in Tesco! I did a little happy dance and was so excited. I hope you enjoy browsing the photos of our work below (click to enlarge). If you would like to learn more about our group and the other talented cake makers check out our Facebook group here. Love Lucie x
